Revitalizing Economic Developemnt In Kyle Part 2
Last week, I talked about ways we could improve economic development for our local entrepreneurs. Today I want to talk about establishing industry in Kyle and the surrounding area.
We know that the corridor between Austin and San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing geographic sectors in the Nation. Kyle has an option with this growth. We can either be strategic and intentional with who we partner with and attract; or, we can sit back and watch the growth occur without a plan. I want a City that both plans for and harnesses economic growth to provide true benefits to our neighbors and those who call Kyle home.
Like a stool, we need at least three legs to establish a stable tax-base. Our local entrepreneurs and small businesses are the first leg, allowing for commerce and economic growth to begin and stay in our City. Mid-sized retail, restaurants, and warehouses help to establish the second base to provide services and goods that our community uses everyday. The third leg is a large industry where residents have a meaningful opportunity for career development, promotions, and stability as we raise our families together.
Attracting a large industry, whether it is blue-collar or white-collar jobs, can require incentives to attract industries here versus our competitor cities. These incentives, however, do not have to come from Kyle alone. The City of Kyle has great partners in the Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership, our neighbors like the cities of San Marcos, Buda, as well as others, and local assets like the San Marcos Regional Airport. We can pool our resources and attract these industries into the area.
These incentives also do not have to be financial, but structural. This includes quick permitting processes, a helpful governmental partner, stable utility connections, and sufficient road and transportation infrastructure.
Economic development shouldn't be about competing against our neighbors. It should be about working with partners to make the entire region stronger.
Whether the industry lands in Kyle or anywhere else in the County, our residents can benefit. Through these partnerships, we can attract economic growth for a fraction of the cost and present a complete package that is competitive across national markets.
